Local Outreach Ministries

Overview

Myers Memorial UMC carries the love of Christ out into our community by sponsoring such projects as providing mentors and school supplies for Grier Middle School and collecting food supplies for Crisis Assistance Ministry on a monthly basis.  We also have two “Supper Clubs” which prepare a dinner once a month for the Domestic Violence Shelter and West Gastonia Boys and Girls Club. Myers Memorial is also the sponsor of The Little Red School House (see attached flyer).  In addition to these outreach projects Myers Memorial participates in the Crop Walk, Relay for Life, Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse, and UNICEF.

Mission Possible

Myers Memorial is proud of our Mission Possible team.  Mission Possible is a means by which we fulfill the command of our Lord given in Matthew 25: 31-46.

In December the Mission Possible Team braved the cold elements, and beat the rain, on two Saturdays to remove all the old layers of shingles, repaired some roof boards and put up new shingles for another family in the Beatty Road area of Gaston County.  They also replaced the decking and did various electrical repairs.

In November the Mission Possible Team traveled to Florida to Volusia Co.  This county has been hit with 5 hurricanes, one topical storm and flooding during 2008. Very few teams are still going but the need is still great. The projects completed in 4 very long days were the removal and replacement of roof shingles on two homes, as well as a new deck for one family.

The Mission Possible team worked along with Hope 4 Gaston. Hope 4 Gaston is a Christian outreach ministry serving the Greater Gaston area made up of churches, community leaders and volunteers who are working together to strengthen communities in Gaston County.  They hold two events a year.  The October project was in the Highland community and lasted for two Saturdays.  At this project the team built a new railing, put in a new screen door, replaced back siding, painted the kitchen, living area and hall, put up crown molding and put down flooring in the kitchen, as well as other various wall repairs.

The Mission Possible worked on a house in Lowell, NC.  Working two Saturdays in September they replaced the front porch, sure-up part of the porch cover, repaired back porch roof, redid back gutters to stop a leaking issue, pressure washed the siding and severally cleaned up the yard.

THE LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE FUND

And How it Began

While on a business trip to New York City in 1981, Harry was eating a delicious dinner in an exclusive restaurant.  As Harry enjoyed his meal, he thought about the fact that the United States Government had recently stopped the funding for several important social programs.  He remember that many

of the children back home in Gaston County would no longer be having lunch every day at school.  In many cases, this was the only daily hot meal they had.

Harry returned home and to his Sunday School Class, the Builders Class at Myers Memorial United Methodist in Gastonia, North Carolina.  He immediately challenged the class members to save and then collect their loose pocket change each Sunday morning. This money was later distributed to each school in the county for students who had no lunch money of their own.  This continued for about two years until the state reinstated the former lunch program.

Harry and his Sunday School Class then decided to change the focus of their endeavors. Having worked with school nurses and social workers for many years, Harry was keenly aware of the need in many families in Gaston County who cannot afford heath insurance.  Also certain needs, such as eye care, are often not covered by insurance. A class member, Raymond Wallace, built a small red schoolhouse which was used to collect the offering for the children each Sunday morning. As word about the project spread, contributions came from many other sources and the fund grew.

The members of the Builders Class are grateful for, and amazed at, the generosity and support of the many people who have become interested in the program over time.  From a small start, the fund has grown each year. The needs for eye care, dental care, and various types of medical care have increased also. God has richly blessed this work, and the Builders Class constantly sees that as they do more for the children, the balance of available fund increases. The class considers it a privilege and a blessing to serve Jesus Christ by providing this service.

GUIDELINES ESTABLISHED BY THE BUILDERS CLASS:

1

One hundred percent of the money goes to provide health care for needy students in Gaston County.

2

The school nurses and dental hygienists are asked to provide the referrals. They have proven to be very reliable and conscientious in using this service only in last resort, emergency situations.

Requests are received and approved by designated members of the Builders Class.
