The Michael McSween Memorial Scholarship

The Scholarship The Michael McSween Memorial Scholarship is made available by the Myers Memorial United Methodist Men, Gastonia, North Carolina and fund administration is by a Scholarship Committee of the United Methodist Men.  A Scholarship Committee will grant annual scholarships of varying amounts to rising college freshmen who meet certain criteria.

The man for whom the scholarship derives a name sets the tone for some of the qualities the Scholarship Committee seeks in a recipient.  Michael McSween was a loving husband and father of two sons, an elementary school teacher by profession, and an active member in the life Myers Memorial United Methodist Church.  He joined the church in November 1986 and served in various capacities.  Michael was assistant Sunday School Superintendent, sang in the Chancel Choir, provided leadership with the children’s choir, was active in the United Methodist Men, and received the Outstanding Service to Christian Education Award.  He died of colon cancer on August 23, 1994. Michael used God-given abilities with compassion and commitment to the service of Myers Memorial United Methodist Church.  This is the key to understanding what the Scholarship Committee seeks in scholarship applicants.
 
Scholarship Contributions
Contributions to the Michael McSween Memorial Scholarship are the source for providing annual scholarship grants.  The United Methodist Men encourage contributions that honor individuals, gifts that offer a memorial to someone, special donations, and designated church offerings.  These contributions invest in the life of a young person pursuing a higher education degree.
 
2020 Application Process 
Applications for the scholarship are available from the United Methodist Men and the church office.  All applications are due to the church office no later than Sunday, May 17, 2020.  The Scholarship Committee may choose not to consider late applications. The Scholarship Committee will consider all applications submitted for scholarships.  An awarded scholarship is a one-time grant for one year.  Applicants may need to attend an interview with the Scholarship Committee. An interested applicant must be an active high school member of Myers Memorial United Methodist Church, Gastonia, North Carolina, and entering or working toward a degree at a college, a university, or a post high school educational institution.

The Scholarship Committee will protect the privacy of all proceedings, discussions, and applications.

The Scholarship Committee will award the Michael McSween Memorial Scholarship on Graduation Sunday.
